Anti-software piracy drive goes out of town

The Pilipinas Anti-Piracy Team led by the Optical Media Board has found unlicensed software in its first leg of a crackdown in Northern Luzon. Lawyer Cyrus Valenzuela, OMB executive director, said the campaign in Pampanga and Zambales showed cases of software being used beyond the coverage of the licensed product in banks, schools and establishments in the manufacturing, service and commercial sector including those in economic zones of the two provinces after a 30-day countdown of announcements in local newspapers. “The companies suspected of being under-licensed or not adhering with the terms and conditions of their licensing agreement were asked to submit documents to the OMB to prove that they were compliant,” he said in a statement, with a warning to take4 corrective measures which will be verified in the next inspection. Software piracy is a violation of the Optical Media Act punishable by up to nine years imprisonment and a fine of up to P1.5 million under the Intellectual Property Code. “The software piracy rate has stagnated at 69 percent over the past few years, whilst the value of pirated software has gradually increased to a high of $278 million in 2010,” he said. “Imagine if the piracy rate [...]
